Poetry Unit

A quarter-long poetry unit in which students' end product is a poetry booklet. The unit will guide students through the world of poetry by having them write 14 poems (including a week of reading and writing spiritual poetry), each focusing on a unique poetry skill (e.g. rhyme scheme, alliteration, and onomatopoeia). Ideally, the poetry unit will develop students into creative writers who enjoy the written word and make descriptive word choices. The booklet is a nice showcase for parents to read at parent-teacher conferences; to be read aloud by student-authors at a special Authors' Tea event; placed in a portfolio for accreditation visiting committees to peruse; or featured in exhibits at a school music concert.
