School Leadership Retention - A Study of Servant Leadership and School Leader Satisfaction

The purpose of this quantitative correlation study was to find the relationship between the level of perceived servant leadership and the school leader job satisfaction in the North American Division (NAD) of Seventh-day Adventists P-12 schools. This quantitative correlation study utilized Laub's (1999) Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) to find the relationship between the levels of servant leadership found and school leader job satisfaction. A stratified random sample of all principals, teachers, and superintendents of 9-12 and K-12 schools with at least 5 teachers were surveyed. Research was needed to understand why school leaders leave the education profession at an unacceptable rate. The research questions for this study were (a) To what extent do private schools in NAD of Seventh-day Adventist P-12 school system implement the principles of servant leadership? (b) What is the relationship between the level of servant leadership revealed in the NAD of Seventh-day Adventist P-12 school system and school leader's level of job satisfaction in the NAD of Seventh-day Adventist P-12 school system? The response rate for this study was 26%. A total of 1260 surveys were mailed to potential participants in order to get the needed 328 responses. A total of 332 responses were received. The study revealed a significant positive correlation of r = .613, p < .01 (two-tailed) between servant leadership and school leader job satisfaction. Additionally, a significant positive correlation of r = .586, p < .01 was present for all participants between servant leadership and job satisfaction. The findings from this study suggest that servant leadership style of leadership has the potential of both retaining and attracting educators in school leadership roles.
