Preventing Adolescent Suicide - The Role of the School

Beginning with reference to a personal encounter with suicide in her family, Dora Clarke-Pine examines the sensitive topic of teen suicide by discussing risk factors, warning signs, and suicide prevention. Elements of prevention covered in this article include peer involvement, parental involvement, coordination with community mental health agencies/services, and obtaining informed consent to follow through with such interventions. Above all, whether serving in middle school or high school, teachers must demonstrate increased awareness about this issue and seek to know their students at various levels of interaction.
