Uriah Smith Upon the Swanee River
This article in the 1844 Anniversary JAE shows how and why the early Adventists wrote hymns to popular tunes, such as Swanee River. Most people could not read or understand music, but they had heard the popular tunes. Also, the popular music and the spiritual were not as far apart from each other as they are in modern times.
