Geography: The Neglected Discipline

A 1988 National Geographic Society survey revealed that Americans 18-24 years old scored lower than all their peers in a nine-nation survey that targeted 10, 280 adults in Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Sweden, Great Britain, West Germany, and the United States. Robert Pierson suggests that the education system has failed to provide opportunities for American students to study geography. Shared are suggestions for teachers on increasing geography awareness in their classrooms.
