Lively Math Teaching-- What is it? How is it Done?

This article in the JAE special math issue introduces elements that teachers must have and what they must do to have successful and lively math classes. Teachers must compile concise yearly goals for their pupils; inspect the textbook and select supplementary resources; map out the whole year; have daily unit and chapter overviews; create internal excitement; insist on clearly headed, well organized, and neatly written papers; instruct in ways that relate equally to each learning style; provide prompt feedback; have common sense rules; minimize whole class instruction and maximize one-on-one instruction; optimize use of class time; and be prepared and inspired.
