Teaching English as a Second Language: Dilemmas and Solutions

Adventist education is ill-prepared to meet the challenge of multilingualism. In 1980, more than 10% of Americans (23 million persons) speak a language other than English at home. Teachers in mainstream classrooms can help students with limited English proficiency. Communication competence consists of grammatical and strategic competence and sociolinguistic competence. Ten fundamentals for teaching a second language are presented. From the JAE multicultural education issue.
