Social and Emotional Problems Related to Dyslexia

The social and emotional difficulties of dyslexia are discussed. Dyslexics' frustration often centers on their inability to meet expectations. Problems include awkwardness in social relationships, variation and inconsistency, anxiety, self-esteem and feelings of inferiority, depression, and the effects on the family. Strategies for success include encouragement and support, setting realistic, attainable goals, a commitment to helping others in volunteer work, tutoring, or selecting a vocation that requires empathy.
