Helping Struggling Readers and Students With Limited English Proficiency
This article examines reading expectations for students, particularly in kindergarten through grade 3, as well as strategies that regular classroom teachers can use to identify and assist struggling readers. Many teachers know what reading materials and strategies work with most students, but lack the background to address the specific needs of struggling or disabled readers and those for whom English is a second language (ESL) or who have limited English proficiency (LEP). From the JAE special issue on reading.
