Competition or Cooperation

A look at sports and the church. In 1976 the General Conference published the pamphlet Guidelines for Activities with Elements of Competition. Ellen White wrote about the dangers of sports, but never used the words competition or rivalry. The church officially opposes interorganizational sports, but in reality it has been a part of school and church activities for years. The article investigates why this dichotomy exists. A look at sports in the late 1800s and comparisons between life then and now provide insight into the counsel given by Mrs. White and allow us to apply to our own day the principles she taught.
