The Role of Phonemic Awareness and Phonics in Beginning Reading

The focus of this article is the importance of phonemic awareness and phonics instruction in teaching beginning reading. Topics discussed include the five levels of phonemic awareness, namely, oral rhyming, oddity tasks, oral blending, oral phoneme segmentation, and phoneme manipulation; phonemic awareness instruction and activities; why not to use the implicit or embedded approaches to teaching phones; explicit and analogic phonics instruction and activities; and implications for teachers of beginning readers.
