English Self-Reflection I

First Quarter (Ninth Grade)

After review and critiquing my work from the beginning of the year, I began to see many improvements that I have made. At first it seemed that I couldn't keep to one topic but would go off on many other subtopics. This proved to be a problem. Recently I looked at an essay that I wrote on Abraham Lincoln this quarter; it showed a lot of improvement in content and in being able to narrow down my focus.

Another field in which I saw improvement was my style of writing. After learning about sentence patterns, it seems as if I unconsciously have started to add them into most eof my writing. For example, I use two adjectives at the beginning of a sentence or I use a prepositional phrase. With all this, it seems that my writing flows much more smoothly and is more effective when I want it to be.

Throughout this English course I have learned many types of writing skills and have started to polish them. One skill is using sentence patterns; this adds to the effectiveness of one's piece and creates a polished effect. I also learned to cut out sentence fragments, although this still seems to plague me at times. Another skill that I learned was how to write a gripping opening paragraph and a solid conclusion.

My writing has been improved in many areas. Overall, my content and organization have improved and I have developed a whole new style. I feel that in the future I will continue to improve on the old, learning new things each quarter.
