Journey to Excellence

Student Self-Reflection

To Whom It May Concern:

Included are four pieces of writing I have done this year, my senior year of academy. I feel they are my best pieces and represent the quality of my work as a whole. They include:

  • A book review: TheGrapes of Wrath
  • A poem: "The Hunt"
  • An original episode of Gulliver's Travels
  • A research paper: "Origins of Political Parties in America"
  • My first piece, the book review, is one of the best I've ewritten. I thought I analyzed the book well and presented my analysis in a clear, focused paper. Writing reviews of books and articles has become much easier for me over my four years of academy. I feel that I can write them much more efficiently and that they are more interesting to read. This may also indicate that as a person I think a lot more about the information I digest.
  • "The Hunt" is a poem I entered in a WWC writing contest. I had fun creating it and I felt it evidences my descriptive powers and attention to the subtle differences of words.
  • Creative writing is something that has been emphasized in my English classes. I've enjoyed most of it and done reasonably well at writing it. One assignment recently given us was to create a new episode for Jonathan Swift's Gulliver to experience. Mine is enclosed. I felt I did a good job of writing a satire, using the political problems of our nation today. Actually, it was fun to write this.
  • My final piece is my "unsatisfying" piece. It is the research paper I did for government class. The reason for my dissatisfaction is I felt my research wasn't presented very well. (I read books of information and then find it very difficult to pick out which information to include and where to place it all.) Also, I felt my paper didn't have a real strong thesis or writer's voice.
  • In creative writing, I feel quite accomplished. I've done a lot of it over my years of academy and I feel very comfortable writing poems, short stories, satires and allegories. I also feel like I'm able to write quality reviews and responses to articles, books, and ideas. Research papers? Well, they're not in a comfort zone yet. However, I'm not as intimidated by them as before I'd ever done one.
  • Overall, I feel that the last four years have seen me grow as a writer. My overly descriptive wording has been tamed down to the right amount. I can also express my thoughts and ideas with more clarity. Thoughts and ideas have come in increasing quantity and depth.
  • I feel these works all have quality writing in them and so submit them as a reflection of my ability.
